Every time I have a chat with a future parent about their upcoming newborn session, the same question crops up: “What should we wear for the session?” I decided to put together this post to give you an idea of what looks good together—and what we can leave at home.
Mum & Dad are a big part of the show. Photographing the connection between you and your baby is one of my favourite parts of the session. Just as they encourage in the hospital, skin-to-skin contact creates the most beautiful images—and these are the pictures you and your baby will cherish most in years to come!
If skin-to-skin doesn’t sound like you, it’s not a problem.
Dads: If you prefer not to be shirtless, I recommend bringing a plain, close-fitting T-shirt or soft henley in a neutral tone (think beige, oatmeal, soft greys, muted greens). Pair it with comfortable jeans or chinos—something relaxed but tidy. A lightweight button-up that complements Mum’s outfit is also great if you want a bit more polish.
Mums: A loose, flowy dress or tank-style top in soft neutrals (nude, cream, blush, grey) photographs beautifully. If you’re more of a vest-and-jeans kind of person, that works too—just keep it light and simple. Solid colours work best; avoid patterns that might distract from the baby. Natural makeup and minimal nail colour (or none at all) keep the focus where it should be. If your hair needs a quick refresh mid-session, bring a brush—we’ll pause if you need a minute to tidy up.
If you’ve looked at my work, you’ll know I’m a fan of neutrals. Whether it’s now or twenty years from now, I want you to look at these images and still love them. Pale tones give that soft, serene look that pairs so well with newborn sessions. One small tip: try to avoid pure white. It tends to blow out in black and white conversions and can create a harsh patch in an otherwise soft image.
When they’re well matched, browns and beiges bring warmth and a sense of calm to your gallery. If you’re not into muted colours and your home has a specific colour palette, let me know. I’ll plan your session styling around the tones in the space where your photos will live. That way they’ll feel completely at home on your walls.
Please leave anything with bold logos, loud prints, or statement jewellery at home. No big watches, hoop earrings, or anything that could pull focus from your baby. This session is all about your connection, and we want the attention to stay on those moments.
Most importantly: choose something you feel like yourself in. If a nude tank top feels alien to you, skip it. You should feel relaxed and confident—otherwise, you’ll feel uncomfortable, and it’ll show in the images. These photos are for YOU, and you need to love what you see.
Still not sure what to wear? Pop me a quick message with a photo or short video of your outfit options via Instagram (@dinkyfeetphotography) or WhatsApp (on 07818408855)—and I’ll help you pick. We’ll get you looking and feeling amazing.
